The Diabetes Education Guide has been recently updated to reflect current standards in diabetes self-management. Specifically, a section has been added on the importance of blood ketone testing and its role in sick day management and the prevention of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is one of the most serious acute complications of diabetes and is the most common cause of death in children with diabetes.1 The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends self monitoring for both glucose and blood ketones on sick days and whenever glucose is persistently elevated.2 Elevated blood ketones are an early warning of the possible development of DKA. This warning allows time to self-manage the problem before it requires medical attention.
